One of the children was falling, a wing dangling uselessly in the air.

"Moulting," Peter thought savagely, the parents must have left it too late. Shouldn't have entered the child.

There was a scream from the crowd as the small body hit the ground, followed by a gasp and a sigh ...

It had been a long day and I was tired. I flicked through the papers, stared off into space, and absent-mindedly began to read the adverts.

And that's when I saw it - on the back page - staring out at me in three-inch high letters.

'The Alien Club,' it screamed. 'Join now, and get these four top-selling aliens for FREE!' ...

She could see now in enhanced vision, overlaid with her current status in the firm, calls logged per minute, her rating, her line-supervisor's rating, her likely prospects within the next five years, her physical location within the building, number of toilet breaks taken by day, month and year and her salary and possible (if she behaved) bonus... '
