The Old Warrior

Major-General Gutless (retd.)
Looked sombrely at the War, declared it invalid:
Pension secured,
This proud MG pronounced on the orders and movements of the day
In a twilight world of studio lights,
Brave soundbites,
The echo of safe action in his voice
And the snap of orders grimly pondered hidden behind a thin veil of decency.

He would have no truck with the main issues,
Morality not his forté, he served his country,
Preferring selective blindness disguised as a soldier’s duty,
But the technicality -!
There he was wise, and could argue the beaks off sparrows
On his chosen battleground of Truth.
For sure, had the War been won his courage would not have been required,
But as the heroes in charge dodged the country to destruction
It was time to roar.

Major General Gutless told the world what (all along) he saw.

Generals are too often no more than executives in Big Corp., more concerned over their comfortable pensions than principles. Not until they’re safely retired do they emerge to proclaim about Rights and Wrongs.
