Some of those dictators were supported by the West because it served the West's political ends e.g. Mubarak in Egypt, Sankoh in Sierra Leone, Abacha in oil-rich Nigeria (he ordered the execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa ). For a list of dictators supported by the 'freedom loving' USA (so long as it's their freedom) you can start here.

Ha!
Our history is one of exploitation. Our democracy has been bought by creating buffer states between us and whatever enemy we currently have. It used to be communism, now it's terrorism. The buffer states would have have puppet leaders or dictators.
Or we'd support dictators in order to maintain the flow of oil or other commodities to our democracies, and never mind the lack of democracy in those places.

the fact that i live in a third world country and the knowledge i have frm the history of my nation i can completely come into terms with the sublect matter of the whole poem. colonization gave the so called great nations the power they yield. they took advantage of our primitivity and they pretend to come to our rescue.
