Aid Tourist

I’ve decided that your country
Needs a dose of me:
There’s plenty of excuses,
But the best is charity.

A little bit of sponsorship
Will get me there in style -
I’ll gladly be of use to you,
And I’ll do it with a smile.

I’m smiling ‘cos I’m happy,
And I’m happy ‘cos I’m here:
This is my Big Adventure
And I’ve banished all my fear -

My job is safe, they’re proud of me,
They’ll gladly have me back:
My family thinks it’s wonderful
I’m trying this new tack.

The local paper’s pleased
To print my picture on its page:
I’ve even started to believe
In my own image.

Oh, it’s wonderful to travel,
And the locals treat me well -
But I’m glad that I don’t live here,
In this Aid tourist Hell.

Sometimes you get to a certain age and it’s not acceptable to take a year out (you should have done so when you were younger). How to get the desire for adventure out of your system? Do a sponsored bike ride and end up in some far-flung country where you can help the locals
